Lakes Area Parrot Heads receive national award
The Lakes Area Parrot Heads club (LAPH), based in Detroit Lakes, Minn., has earned the 2011 Golden Coconut Award of
Excellence from Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc. (PHiP). This national honor was awarded to the
LAPH November 5 at PHiP’s 20th annual national convention in Key West, Fla.
The Golden Coconut recognizes Parrot Head clubs for outstanding charitable and environmental efforts, with the winning chapter
designated as the flagship chapter of the PHiP organization for the following year. Honorees are selected based on an essay
summarizing club activities on behalf of its service area, with entries blind-judged by previous award winners. There are more than
225 Parrot Head chapters with 28,000 members in 45 states, Canada and Australia.
“This isn’t just our award; this belongs to everybody in our communities,” says Jim Brogren, club president. “We couldn’t have brought
this award home without our members’ hard work, community support, and generous donations from our partner, Zorbaz on the Lake,
and our other sponsors, including The Bridge, Holiday Inn, J & K Marine, and many others.”
LAPH activities highlighted in the essay include:
- Annual Boats and Bars fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity
- Annual fundraiser and dance held during Polar Fest in Detroit Lakes
- Food bank contributions in Detroit Lakes and Fargo
- Christmas visits to nursing home residents and hospital patients
- Giving Tree contributions to the Mahube Community Council
The essay is available at the Lakes Area Parrot Heads website, www.lakesareaparrotheads.com
